Outflows from Russia in the wake of sanctions and index exclusions due to Ukraine war can find home in Indonesia and Malaysia as both Southeast Asian nations produce commodities like Russia and Ukraine, according to money managers Samsung Asset and Modular Asset.
Malaysia and Indonesia will act as “substitute investments” said Alan Richardson, a fund manager at Samsung Asset Management in Hong Kong.
“It is beneficial for the rest of the EM complex far away from EMEA — like Asia — especially those who are safe haven exporters of resources like Malaysia and Indonesia,” said Wai Ho Leong, a strategist at Modular Asset Management in Singapore.
