Hello all, hope everyone's ready for this fire sale... that may go on very very long (or short).
Coincidentally, I created this account in Stockbit back in March 2020, it's been 5 years. So, technically, I'm living through my 2nd market crash, hopefully it'll not go to the great depression level where stocks are -90% down... but if it does, I guess we can only be at peace with it?
Back then, I was clueless and just started investing in the stock market, I experienced panic and cut loss at the bottom (wherever the bottom was), and I bought weird stocks and loss even more because of revenge trade / mentality of I need to get back them profits/capital (fast).
Well, I still remember how it all felt, like how the world was going to end, and that's helpful because if you've never experienced a crash, this is a good time to experience one and remember how it feels, so you can be prepared for the next one, if for any reason, you don't have cash-on-hand to deploy.
For those who had experienced the covid crash, and said "if only I could buy it at covid level, then I can just collect >xx% dividend portfolio" , then, isn't this the chance you've been waiting for?
Hindsight is 20/20.
Anyway, compared to 5 years ago, at least, I now know my risk appetite, my investment horizon, my level of patience, some stuff about companies/businesses that I'm investing in, those are the intangible knowledge that will help weather through this crash, I hope.
As usual, do your own due diligence, some things to keep in mind and level-headed:
- don't invest more than you can lose, very important. The last thing you want is force liquidation at the bottom.
- buy a stock/company only if you plan to hold it for long term > 5 years, and if you're confident the company will do well/not go bankrupt/management has integrity.
- best if the company can continue giving dividends (rewarding even the minorities) while holding unrealised losses for however long.
- it's hard to time the market, really. But if you want to try, you can make an educated guess via historical data.
- Surviving through the trough is good enough.
Alright, may the odds be in our favour and we learn something from crashes.
